On Monday, April 28th, Congressmen Michael Grimm of New York and co-chair of the Armenian Congressional Caucus, was indicted on 20 counts of fraud. He is accused of evading the IRS by failing to claim $1billion in revenue from his Manhattan restaurant, Healthalicious. The indictment is especially shocking and the repurcussions┬ámore severe given Grimm’s history as a Marine Corps combat veteran and a former FBI Special Agent.

This is not the first time, however, that Grimm’s actions have been called into question:

  • In the past, Healthalicious has paid fines for not providing its employees with workers’ compensation, for not adhering to state wage laws, and for state tax and business law by paying workers in cash.
  • In 2010, the FBI investigated the financing of Grimm’s campaign. During that race, Grimm admitted to receiving funds, which might have included tens of thousands of dollars in illegal contributions, including gifts through straw donors.
  • In 2012, the House Ethics Committee formally opened an investigation into Grimm’s fundraising activities. The investigation deferred, however, to the Department of Justice who was also investigating Grimm’s fundraising activities.
  • In January of this year, Grimm threatened to defenestrate a reporter and “break [him] in half” in response to a questions regarding allegations of wrong-doing in his campaign financing
